2 Groups to Propose Tet Celebrations
In past years, Tet Festival celebrations have ranked among the city’s most controversial annual events, and that trend probably will continue in 1998.
Two groups are vying for the use of overlapping sections of Bolsa Avenue during Tet, the celebration of the Vietnamese New Year.
The Vietnamese-American Cultural Society, led by Hoe D. Tran, is requesting a permit for a three-day Tet Festival Jan. 30 through Feb. 1, on Bolsa between Magnolia Avenue and Newland Street, city officials said.
Another group, the Little Saigon Cultural and Arts Assn., led by Luan Nguyen, has requested a permit for a Lunar New Year Parade Jan. 31, along a stretch of Bolsa between Purdy and Bushard streets.
In past years, Tet celebrations have become controversial as more groups seek to host competing festivals.
In addition, merchants have voiced anger over lost business during the festivals.
