School Trustees to Decide Leadership

Simi Valley school trustees are scheduled tonight to pick whom they want to be their leader in 1998.

Current President Norm Walker, signaling his interest in serving a second term in the mostly ceremonial post, said consecutive terms could provide more stability in leadership.

“It’s difficult to have continuity” without a second term, he said.

But Trustee Carla Kurachi believes it’s her turn, based on seniority, to assume the presidency of the Simi Valley Unified School District board. She served as president once before in her seven years as a board member.

Because the board often votes in a 3-2 split, Kurachi said she doesn’t believe she has the votes to become president. Instead, Kurachi she hopes the baton will be handed to Trustee Janice DiFatta, who is now the board’s clerk.

“I believe Janice wants the board to work together as a team,” Kurachi said.

DiFatta, a member of the board’s conservative majority, had no comment.
