This holiday season, Whole Foods Markets boasts “the first ever healthy and fit Santa.” Festivities, Whole Foods announces, will include “a free Polaroid photo with Santa after kids fill out a ‘Were you a healthy and helpful child this year?’ checklist.”

If this sensible sort of holiday festivity appeals to you, it’s just the sort of holiday festivity you’ll like. Just don’t let the kids get the idea they could be talking to an old-fashioned bowlful-of-jelly Santa instead.

Do You Scratch?

A poll commissioned by a large group of boxed-chocolate makers has found that only 2% of Americans scratch the bottom of a chocolate with a fingernail to see what the filling is before deciding whether to eat it (4% of women but only 1% of men, by the way, possibly because men’s fingernails are shorter). This is reassuring . . . or would be, if we trusted all candy-scratchers to speak frankly to a pollster.
