1996 Pacific Rim Dry Riesling
($8)
Randall Grahm, the restless Santa Cruz proprietor of Bonny Doon Vineyard, is an original, no doubt about it; he’s the creator of the eccentric wines Cigare Volant, Old Telegram and Clos de Gilroy Grenache. This time he has hit the value-quality jackpot with his 1996 Pacific Rim Dry Riesling, a blend of Rieslings from California, Washington and the Mosel (yes, from the fabled slopes of the Mosel valley in Germany). It’s a lot of wine for the money; scented with pear and lime, it tastes as crisp and juicy as a Fuji apple. This is a fusion wine for fusion cuisine and would be perfect with seafood as well as with pan-Asian dishes.
