Americans Hit the Road for Holidays
A record 44.5 million Americans will take trips of 100 miles or more this holiday season, according to the American Automobile Assn., and another survey indicates winter travel will be up 5% from last year, at the highest level since 1992.
“It will be an all-time winter travel extravaganza,” predicted William S. Norman, president of the Travel Industry Assn. of America, citing a telephone survey of winter travel plans by 1,500 people.
The top domestic destination for winter continues to be Florida, with 50% of potential travelers listing it; next are California, with 36%, and Hawaii, with 18%. California and Florida increased three percentage points over last year, while Hawaii slipped two points.
According to the AAA, Mexico is the favorite international destination, followed by the Caribbean and London.
