McMillian Paces Brea Olinda Rally
Chris McMillian scored 16 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter as second-ranked Brea Olinda rallied to defeat Rowland Heights Rowland, 97-93, in nonleague boys’ basketball Wednesday at Rowland Heights.
The Wildcats (8-1) trailed by as many as 11 points during the final quarter, in which it outscored Rowland, 29-16. Reed Carlson contributed 20 points for Brea Olinda.
In other tournament games:
Capistrano Valley 69, Palos Verdes Chadwick 54--The Cougars were limited to five points in the opening quarter, but outscored Chadwick, 64-41, over the final three. Mike Stowell led Capistrano Valley with 20 points.
Huntington Beach 65, Pomona 63--Matij Prenosil had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Huntington Beach. Pomona had a chance to tie the game with four seconds left but missed a 20-foot jumper. Nick Sinclair scored 13 points for the Oilers (4-2).
Oceanside 62, Dana Hills 59--Larry Page’s three-point attempt at the buzzer clanked off the back of the rim and Tim McKee’s 27-point effort went for naught as Dana Hills (3-4) lost the first-round game.
University 96, Torrance 72--Eric Palmer paced University with 26 points. Jeff Groendal had 18 points and Justin Hunt had 15 points.
In the Troy Classic:
Corona del Mar 65, Paramount 55--Ryan Franke scored 17 points for Corona del Mar (2-5). Ron Odom scored 13 points for Paramount (4-4).
La Puente Bishop Amat 73, Whittier Christian 62--Jon Stoa scored 26 points and Josh Stofle had 16 for Whittier Christian (4-4). Jason Smoot scored 20 points for Bishop Amat (6-2).
Troy 78, Pico Rivera El Rancho 56--Jerry Inzunza had 23 points, eight assists and five steals as Troy handed El Rancho its first loss of the season. The Warriors (5-2) controlled the game and had opened up a 63-36 lead by the end of the third quarter.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Laguna Beach 66, Bolsa Grande 51--B.J. Jameson scored 27 points and Nick Reynolds pulled down 17 rebounds for Laguna Beach (7-2), which led at the half, 38-26.
In first round of the Lakewood Artesia-Brethren Christian girls’ basketball tournament:
No. 5 Marina 79, Romona Covent 34--Natalie Nakase had 16 points and nine assists for Marina (6-1) in the first-round game. The Vikings play Costa Mesa in the second round Thursday.
In the Gary Raya Classic:
El Dorado 66, Canyon 41--Jennie Bluth scored 19 points ad Stephanie Patten added 13 for El Dorado (6-1), which led by 20 points at halftime. Justina Kahaku scored 10 points for Canyon (3-5).
In the La Quinta tournament:
Dana Hills 55, Santiago 48--Dana Hills limited Santiago to one fourth quarter basket and rallied from a seven-point deficit entering the final quarter. Jennifer Carlisle scored 18 points for the Dolphins (4-4) in the pool-play game.
La Quinta 50, Saddleback 46 (OT)--Nadiya Aziz scored four of her 12 points in overtime for La Quinta (3-4), which outscored Saddleback, 6-2, in the period. Aziz also had 16 rebounds and six steals and Pat Rains had 24 points for the Aztecs.
