Panel OKs Plan for New Avenue Library

Ventura’s library advisory committee has approved a plan for a new Avenue branch library that would increase space by one-third, include room for at least 12 computers and provide a community meeting room.

Drafting the plan cost $24,500 in federal grant funds. Wednesday’s committee recommendation is scheduled to go before the City Council in January for final approval.

Nick Deitch of Mainstreet Architects drew up the plans for the new library, planned for the ground floor of the soon-to-be refurbished Casa De Anza building at 606 N. Ventura Ave.

Approval of the plans will be an important step toward expanding the tiny, cramped west side library and moving it to a more central location on Ventura Avenue, officials say.

Bill Fulton, head of the library advisory committee, said he expects work to begin at the end of January, and the new library to open next summer.

The committee also agreed to approach the city’s Public Art Committee to talk about including public art in the Avenue Library, or at the E.P. Foster Library downtown.
