The city will receive $375,000 to hire five new police officers through a federal grant announced Friday by Vice President Al Gore.

The funding is part of a package of grants totaling more than $52 million from the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, Universal Hiring Program that aims to add 800 new police officers at 316 law enforcement agencies in 43 states.

Orange’s grant is the largest amount given to the seven California cities that received grants.

“The officers and deputies hired with these grants will help continue the reduction in crime the nation has experienced in recent years,” Gore said in a statement.

The grant is part of the Clinton administration’s effort to hire 100,000 additional police officers by the year 2000. To date, the administration has announced grants to hire 67,000 officers and deputies for about 10,000 departments.

The grant will fund 75% of the total salary and benefits of each officer for a three-year period. The city of Orange will pay the remainder.
