Pacers Deny Stackhouse
The Indiana Pacers survived a 19-point fourth-quarter outburst and 33 points overall by Jerry Stackhouse in his Piston debut as they won their fifth consecutive game Friday night, 98-90, over Detroit at Indianapolis.
Stackhouse, traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Pistons on Thursday in a four-player deal, topped his previous season high by one point and almost brought Detroit back from a late 19-point deficit single-handedly.
Rik Smits scored 20 points, including two key free throws with 48.9 seconds to play, Reggie Miller had 17 points and Dale Davis scored a season-high 15 and pulled down 10 rebounds for Indiana.
Toronto 92, Milwaukee 91--Damon Stoudamire scored a career-high 36 points at Toronto as the Raptors ended a franchise-record 11-game home losing streak.
Stoudamire, who added eight assists and seven rebounds, made a three-point basket to put the Raptors up, 92-91, with 59.2 seconds to play.
Miami 91, Philadelphia 84--Tim Hardaway had 22 points and a season-high 14 assists as the Heat broke a two-game losing streak at Philadelphia.
Theo Ratliff, playing his first game for the 76ers after being acquired Thursday in a four-player trade with Detroit, scored a season-high 17 points and had seven rebounds.
The game also marked the return of 76er forward Derrick Coleman, who sat out 13 games because of an irregular heartbeat, and he had six points and eight rebounds.
Washington 106, Charlotte 86--Led by Juwan Howard’s 26 points, the Wizards made it 7-0 at the MCI Center in Washington, ending the Hornets’ five-game winning streak.
Chris Webber had 24 points and a season-high 19 rebounds and Calbert Cheaney scored 16 points.
New York 104, Cleveland 77--Patrick Ewing had 22 points and 10 rebounds at Cleveland and the Knicks ended a six-game road losing streak by handing the Cavaliers’ their worst loss of the season.
Cleveland’s Shawn Kemp fouled out with 5 1/2 minutes left, scoring only 10 points.
Houston 116, Sacramento 98--Kevin Willis scored 28 points, including six consecutive in a 20-7 run late in the fourth quarter as the Rockets won at Houston.
The victory was the 11th in the last 13 games for Houston and the ninth consecutive at home.
Portland 96, Vancouver 91--Isaiah Rider scored 29 of his 31 points in the second half to rally the Trail Blazers at Portland, Ore.
Rider made two consecutive three-point baskets to put the Trail Blazers ahead, 79-74, with 6:10 left, and they held on to end a three-game losing streak.
NBA Notes
Kevin Cosgrove, a senior producer at ABC’s “Good Morning America,” was suspended for a month without pay for using a racist slang term when discussing a planned segment on basketball star Latrell Sprewell. Cosgrove told two of “Good Morning America’s” talent bookers, “the bosses want spades for the Sprewell segment,” according to the New York Daily News. . . . The Indiana Pacers activated forward Derrick McKey, who ruptured his Achilles tendon on April 11, from the injured list and put reserve center Mark West, who had surgery on his knee Thursday, on the injured list.
