Sailors Roll to Title in Water Polo

Newport Harbor used a strong performance in the second quarter to beat Edison, 11-2, Friday in the finals of the Villa Park girls’ water polo tournament.

Newport Harbor, ranked sixth in the county, outscored No. 7 Edison by four goals in the second quarter to take a six-goal lead. Alden Moore scored six goals and Jenna Barto had three for the Sailors (6-1). Edison drops to 6-3.

In another tournament game:

Santa Margarita 6, Costa Mesa 5--Costa Mesa blew a third-quarter lead as the Eagles came back with goals in the third and fourth quarter in the fifth-place game. Laurie Egus scored the winning goal for the Eagles (5-3) with 1 minute 8 seconds left in the game. Rebecca Peterson led Santa Margarita with three goals and Stacey Serra had eight saves. Lombardo had 23 saves for Costa Mesa (4-4).

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

No. 1 Marina 13, Mission Viejo 1--Jenny Lamb scored six goals and had seven steals and goalkeeper Candice Chick stopped eight shots for Marina (5-1).

No. 4 Irvine 10, No. 2 Capistrano Valley 5--Junior Erin Lezak’s five goals and Kirsten Mayberry’s 20 saves helped the Vaqueros. Nicole Huszcz had three goals for Irvine (8-1). Junior Ashley Stachowski had three goals for Capistrano Valley (6-2).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

No. 2 Santa Margarita 1, Santiago 0--Matt Froehlich hit the lower corner of the net from 22 yards in the second half to give Santa Margarita (5-0-3) its only goal.

No. 6 Saddleback 3, Orange 2--Saddleback’s Tomas Serna scored the game-winning goal at 72:45. Saddleback is 5-1 and Orange drops to 5-2.

No. 10 Laguna Hills 3, El Toro 0--Ian Ellis and Andy Johnson made five and three saves, respectively, in Laguna Hills’ shutout. Kevin McConaughy scored his eighth goal of the year. Brian Shim and Robby Balogh each scored for Laguna Hills (6-3-1).

Century 3, Villa Park 2--Jose Blanco and Ernesto Delgado each scored in the second half to bring Century (3-5) back from a one-goal deficit at halftime. Delgado scored the winning goal in the 50th minute off an assist from Victor Guerrero. Villa Park is 4-4.

In the Brea Olinda boys’ tournament:

No. 3 Woodbridge 9, Whittier California 0--Daniel Chun and Ryan Orosz each scored two goals for Woodbridge. The Warriors (6-0-3) will play Troy at 10:45 a.m. today.

Servite 1, Sonora 0--Ryan Delaney scored with 10 minutes left in the game as Servite improved to 9-0 and advanced to the semifinals. Garrett Hansen had the assist.

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Costa Mesa 5, Los Amigos 1--Julie Kroening had two goals and an assist in the first half as Costa Mesa (5-1-2) built a 4-1 lead.
