No. 2 Mission Viejo Shuts Down Griffins in Girls’ Soccer

Hannah Cochrun had four saves as Mission Viejo defeated seventh-ranked Los Alamitos, 1-0, for the championship of the Vanguard Cup girls’ soccer tournament Saturday at El Modena.

Cochrun has been nearly flawless this season for second-ranked Mission Viejo (7-0-1) with seven shutouts and only one goal given up.

Amber Skallered scored in the 30th minute for the Diablos.

Los Alamitos drops to 6-1-1.

Cochrun also had two saves against El Modena in a 6-0 pool-play victory. Jen Mescher scored two goals against El Modena.

Los Alamitos also won a pool-play game, defeating Newhall Hart, 2-0. Nikki Szlak and Nicole Mularkey each scored goals for the Griffins.

In the Brea Olinda boys’ soccer tournament:

Servite 4, Irvine 2--Javier Vallejo scored two goals as undefeated Servite won its 11th consecutive match and the Brea Olinda tournament championship. Tommy Barro had two goals for Irvine (4-2-2).

In Brea Olinda Christmas Classic wrestling:

Anaheim wins--Anaheim captured the team championship with 208.5 points. Laguna Hills (194), Loara (170) and Brea Olinda (169.5) finished in second, third and fourth place.

Loara’s Tony Aparicio won the 130-pound title and was named outstanding wrestler in the lower weight classes. Anaheim’s Edgar Saldivar, the 189-pound champion, was named the outstanding wrestler in the upper weights.

In the Big Bear Open:

San Clemente wins--Jimmy Faith won the 125-pound title by defeating Jesse Carragher of Victorville Silverado, 9-3, to lead San Clemente, which finished with 198 points, nine ahead of West Hills (Nev.) and Virgin Valley (Nev.). Foothill came in fourth with 170 points.

Foothill’s Ben Balmages won at 130 pounds, pinning Virgin Valley’s David Kelly in 2 minutes 59 seconds.

Foothill’s Jim Gominsky won the 160-pound title by pinning Brian Schubert of Laughlin (Nev.) in 3:27. Foothill’s David Liti pinned Justin Fallas of Industry Workman in 1:09 to win the heavyweight division.

In the Whittier 12-Way tournament:

Mission Viejo wins--Mission Viejo won five dual meets to win the ‘A’ Division. Alex Bonilla won at 119 pounds for the Diablos with a record of 4-0.

Teammate Jeremy Pritchard went 5-0 to win at 215 pounds.

In the Benson Splash girls’ water polo tournament:

Santa Barbara 8, Los Alamitos 6--Amy Valois scored three goals as Los Alamitos lost in the championship match. Goalie Jackie Frank had 11 saves for the Griffins (7-2) and scored a goal from the goalie box.

Santa Barbara improves to 7-0.

Shelli Linza scored the winning goal in sudden-death overtime for Los Alamitos in a 4-3 semifinal victory over Poway.

In the San Clemente tournament:

Fountain Valley 5, Aliso Niguel 4--Kelly Smith scored three goals as Fountain Valley (8-2) rallied to defeat Aliso Niguel in the championship game.
