Congratulations to all Angelenos, whose charitable commitment has finally been publicly recognized (Dec. 22), and to the California Community Foundation for making that recognition happen!

The article on charitable giving was a most welcome response to the seemingly growing industry of Southern California critics who seek to criticize much about our region, including how charitable we are.

What this study shows is that Angelenos are even more charitable than many in this country .J.J. but their pattern of giving is different. As a result, those assessing giving by focusing only on giving to a limited number of major institutions failed to recognize our philanthropic spirit.

Perhaps now our critics’ energies will be redirected to help celebrate the many individuals and organizations that provide vitally needed support and services in our area and beyond .J.J. and to help celebrate the central role that volunteerism and philanthropy play in our democratic society.
