**1/2 SPICE GIRLS. “Spice: The Official Video Volume 1,” Warner Home Video, $14.95
Let other rock stars complain about the rigors of sudden fame. For the Spice Girls, life in the spotlight is a bowl of maraschino cherries. This video--subtitled “One Hour of Girl Power”--reveals how over the past year these preternaturally peppy pop tarts have become the most overexposed female group in history, with behind-the-scenes footage of concerts, video shoots, rehearsals, radio appearances and assorted female-bonding rituals. We even get a peek at the Fab Five watching themselves on what appears to be a home video machine, mugging and giggling as they survey their own adventures.
The girls remain the picture of cheerful camaraderie throughout, whether sweating through a video session in the Mojave Desert--for “Say You’ll Be There,” one of the five full-length videos included here--or greeting giddy fans in Hong Kong. The entire production has an unabashedly goofy, girly-girl sensibility suggesting “A Hard Day’s Night” remade by a cheerleading squad. “It’s not easy being cheesy,” Ginger Spice reminds us at one point. But at least the Spice Girls make it look like fun.
