Mountie Victory Comes in Steryo

Rocky Steryo scored 31 points and Montclair Prep dominated Notre Dame, 88-44, in the semifinals of the La Salle/Temple City boys’ basketball tournament Monday night at La Salle.

The Mounties (10-3), ranked ninth in the region by The Times, limited Notre Dame to 14 points in the second half. The Knights (6-4) did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Jules Thompson added 18 points and 17 rebounds for Montclair Prep.

Notre Dame was led by Joe Donnelly with 15 points.

Montclair Prep will face Temple City, a 59-58 winner over Pasadena Marshall, at 7:30 tonight in the championship game at La Salle.

In other La Salle/Temple City tournament games:

Harvard-Westlake 97, Franklin 78--The Wolverines dished out a team-record 30 assists in a consolation-bracket victory.

Victor Munoz and Russell Lakey each scored 24 points for Harvard-Westlake (11-2), ranked No. 5 in the region.

Munoz, who had 10 assists, made 11 of 14 shots. Lakey, who had eight assists, made 10 of 15 shots.

El Monte 75, Village Christian 74--Marcus Coria scored 21 points for the Lions (5-8), including two free throws in the final 15 seconds to secure a triple-overtime consolation victory.

Paul Tait had 32 points and 10 rebounds for Village Christian (3-6).

Reseda 66, La Salle 56--Jaime Sibrian had 19 points and Victor Koopongsakorn added 18 for the Regents (4-6) in a consolation game.

In other boys’ games:

Channel Islands 89, St. Joseph 83--Dwight Sattiewhite scored 38 points for the Raiders (9-2) in an overtime victory in pool play of the Santa Barbara tournament.

O.J. Thomas added 18 points and had six assists for Channel Islands.

Taft 87, North Hollywood 76--Harold Shevlin scored 34 points for the Toreadors (7-2), ranked No. 10 in the region, in a consolation game of the Eagle Rock tournament.

Keron Wilkerson scored 26 for North Hollywood (8-6).

Oxnard 84, Hueneme 52--Damian Tafoya scored 25 points and Jacob Rogers had 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Yellowjackets (6-4) in the third-place game of the Santa Paula tournament.

Rowland 84, Crescenta Valley 79--Kean Mallory scored 18 points on eight-for-14 shooting, but the Falcons (7-6) lost a consolation game in the Anaheim Canyon tournament.

Grant 76, Monroe 61--Gilbert Arenas scored 32 points for the Lancers (7-5) in the semifinals of the Birmingham tournament.

Moorpark 83, Righetti 56--Kevin Lawrence had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Musketeers (11-3) in pool play of the Santa Barbara tournament. Moorpark, which is 3-0 in pool play, will play San Marcos, the only other 3-0 team, at 6:30 tonight.

Hoover 75, Antioch 65--Mark Hull scored 39 points for the Tornadoes (9-4) in pool play of the Estancia tournament.

GIRLS

Harvard-Westlake 74, San Dimas 52--L’Tanya Robnett and Omelogo Udeze each scored 19 points for the Wolverines (11-2), ranked No. 4 in the region, in the first round of the Best of the West tournament at Ganesha High in Pomona.

Udeze also grabbed 10 rebounds and Robnett had seven rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Chino 61, North Hollywood 44--Tashean Thomas and Lindsay Sotero-Higa each scored 12 points, but the No. 3 Huskies (11-1) lost in the quarterfinals of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Chino (10-2) plays Crescenta Valley, ranked No. 1 in the region, in a semifinal game tonight.

Thousand Oaks 57, Rio Mesa 45--Melissa Simonetti had 17 points for the Lancers (7-1) in a quarterfinal game at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

El Camino Real 76, Canoga Park 23--Cara Blumfield had 36 points, 10 steals and six assists for the Conquistadores (7-0) in a first-round game of the Canoga Park tournament.

Cornerstone Christian 60, Santa Maria Valley Christian 33--Julia Tamai had 17 points and seven steals for the Eagles (3-3) in the first round of the Santa Maria Valley Christian tournament.

MEN

Cal Lutheran 68, Capital University 64--The Kingsmen (4-4) jumped to a 14-2 lead and led by as many as 22 in the second half before the Crusaders (3-6) rallied in a semifinal game of the Cal Lutheran tournament.

Mike Dulaney had 22 points and Cory Johnson 20 for the Kingsmen, who shot 28% from the field in the second half.

WOMEN

Pepperdine 69, Portland State 48--Former Alemany High standout Samantha Rigley had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Waves (9-4) in the first round of the Pepperdine tournament.

Valley 73, Pierce 62--Tanya McLaughlin came off the bench to score 26 points and Meresaini Malaki had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Monarchs (8-7) in a consolation game of the Fullerton tournament.
