FISH REPORT

FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--Action slowing on upper lake. Still some bluegills biting on red worms. Bass fishing poor. Mudsuckers, water dogs and live bait taking some in lower lake.

18. LAKE PIRU--Trollers taking trout 30-40 feet deep from center of the lake and south of the dam. Bikini Needlefish working well. Crawdads in Diablo Cove good for bass. Crappies biting on finger jigs.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Fishing slow. A few stripers taken near base on anchovies and night crawlers. Largemouths and bluegills biting around docks on red worms and meal worms.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Trout fishing spotty--hot one day, cold the next. There are enough anglers to pinpoint a few good spots, but just when a pattern develops, the fish disappear.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Catfish, 10-12 pounds, providing most of the action. Dallas Rhodes, Ojai, caught his limit of fish 3-6 1/2 pounds on surface Rapalas. Slow week for bass.

22. CORONA LAKE--Trophy catfish stocking is set for this weekend. Chanthala Iemsisanuth, Fullerton, 39-pound catfish using night crawlers at Kids Lake.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Like Corona, lakes will be stocked with trophy catfish.

24. IRVINE LAKE--Large catfish caught for the fourth consecutive week. Kevin Perreiral, Garden Grove, 68-pound blue catfish, the biggest of the year, near the island outside Sierra Cove.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Huge schools of catfish have been holding at deep end of lake. Boats anchored in middle catching so many fish anglers losing count. Docks No. 1 and 2 have been best spots. Night anglers still enjoying easy limits anywhere on the lake. Mackerel and chicken livers working best.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Limits on catfish, 15-40 feet deep at inlet and dam. Some bluegills biting at east end. Striped bass, 1-4 pounds, biting on chicken livers and anchovies near inlet. Largemouth bass hitting on split-shot-rigged plastic worms.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Bass and bluegills are hot. Bobby Tortis, 8, Long Beach, caught a 10-6 largemouth at Sail Cove with mudsuckers. Alan Leslie, Riverside, 8-2 bass on Power Worm at dam. A lot of five-pound bass being taken in marina with night crawlers. Rock Climbers Cove, points and dam best areas.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Barrett is the place to be if you’re looking for bass. More than 1,500 caught and released. El Capitan and Hodges anglers caught more than 600. San Vicente has a hot bluegill bite and the crappie bite is fair at Hodges.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Plenty of recently stocked trout coming in. Inflated night crawlers with Power Bait best.

30. BIG BEAR LAKE--Weigh stations reporting rainbow limits, some fish as much as five pounds. Largemouth bass up to six pounds biting too, and bluegill making a comeback.

31. BISHOP--Salmon eggs and mealworms have been good for trout at Bishop Creek. Silver Dupers and silver Mepps the best artificials. Fred Coons, Gardenville, six-pound trout on worms at Lake Sabrina. Yellow and the new red, white and blue Power Bait are bringing in trout at Big Pine Creek. Great fishing at Tinnemaha Creek with salmon eggs.

32. MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Crowley Lake yielding limits of trout to five pounds. Mimi Sakagecki, Palos Verdes, 8-7 rainbow on night crawler at Alligator Point. A large plant of Alpers trout was made recently at Convict Lake. Midday fishing good on Lower and Upper Rock Creek.

33. JUNE LAKE LOOP--Green Power Bait and inflated night crawlers fished off the bottom getting trout at Gull. At June Lake, morning surface trolling with brown Woolly Buggers producing fish. Glittery Power Bait best at Silver.

34. BRIDGEPORT AREA--Exceptional stream fishing on Walker River. Trout up to 10 pounds taking both flies and lures. Fishing fair to good at Bridgeport Reservoir, depending on wind conditions. Boat fishing good for rainbows in 2-4pound range. Virginia lakes producing good bank and float-tube fishing. Twin lakes good for pan-size fish.

2. MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--87 anglers (4 boats): 26 lingcod, 747 rock cod, 40 albacore. (Bob’s Sportfishing)--8 anglers (1 boat): 4 red rock cod, 116 rockfish.

3. AVILA BAY (Avila Beach)--54 anglers (3 boats): 423 rock cod, 282 red rock cod, 9 lingcod, 1 cabezon, 1 black seabass (released), 80 albacore.

4. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--39 anglers (2 boats): 126 calico bass, 9 sand bass, 1 sculpin, 70 barracuda, 17 rockfish. (Hornet’s Landing)--32 anglers (1 boat): 118 calico bass, 16 sand bass, 1 halibut, 3 sculpin, 100 mackerel, 4 barracuda, 6 rockfish, 1 black seabass (released).

5. VENTURA--64 anglers (3 boats): 164 calico bass, 336 sand bass, 6 barracuda, 3 halibut. (Harbor Village)--41 anglers (2 boats): 198 calico bass, 145 sand bass, 26 barracuda, 1 whitefish, 1 lingcod, 9 rockfish.

6. OXNARD (Cisco’s)--172 anglers (6 boats): 283 barracuda, 239 calico bass, 4 halibut, 19 rockfish, 22 sculpin, 1 sole, 250 sand bass, 5 whitefish.

7. PORT HUENEME--84 anglers (4 boats): 217 calico bass, 2 white seabass, 279 sand bass, 158 barracuda, 1 whitefish, 6 rockfish.
