Pooley, Jurgensen Lowest of the Low at 11 Under

Don Pooley, who hasn’t won on the PGA Tour in 10 years, started his second round Friday with three birdies and went on to take a share of the lead at the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic.

Pooley and Steve Jurgensen, playing only because of a sponsor’s exemption, were at 11-under-par 133 after two rounds at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss. They were a stroke ahead of David Ogrin and Steve Lowery.

The cut was at three under, the second-lowest on the PGA Tour this year.

Jimmy Powell matched the tournament record with an eight-under 64, including seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch, for a one-stroke lead over Hale Irwin and Larry Gilbert after the first round of the 54-hole Burnet Senior Classic at Coon Rapids, Minn. . . . Michele Redman shot a 67 to finish 36 holes in 11-under 131, and holds a three-stroke lead over Cindy Schreyer in the JAL Big Apple Classic at New Rochelle, N.Y. . . . Tim Clark, who was born in South Africa, and Ryuji Imada, a native of Japan, advanced to the U.S. Amateur Public Links championship at Lexington, Ky.--only the second final between two foreign-born players this century. . . . Mark Johnson of Helendale and James Camaione of Upland shot 68s and after two rounds share a one-stroke lead over Jason Semelsberger of Newhall in the Southern California Golf Assn.’s Amateur Championship at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake. . . . John Daly says he will return to the PGA Tour next week at the Greater Hartford Open.
