Man Dies After Being Struck by Train
An unidentified man apparently put himself in the way of a train, which struck and killed him instantly Thursday morning, police said.
The 72-car train was unable to stop before crushing the man, who was “lying on the tracks gazing at stars with his hands on his head like he was watching a football game,” said Los Angeles Police Officer Brian McClary.
The incident happened about 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of San Fernando Road and Garber Street. Police found a pack of cigarettes and a can of light beer sitting next to the point of impact.
Police say the man did not have a wallet and wore no jewelry. “He didn’t even have a handkerchief in his pocket,” McClary said.
Police hope friends or relatives will be able to identify him from a couple of tattoos--an eagle on his left shoulder and a pitchfork-wielding, horned Donald Duck on his right. The coroner is also planning to use his fingerprints to try to find a match.
Police described the man as balding, in his 40s, with short brown hair, weighing 220 pounds and standing 5 feet, 8 inches tall.
Anyone with possible information about the victim’s identity should call Valley detectives at (818) 756-8391.
