Stumpy, Lucky, Sandy Excel

A bright spot in the Kings’ 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday was the line play of center Jozef Stumpel, left wing Luc Robitaille and right wing Sandy Moger.

They accounted for both goals and made several nice plays as if they had played together all season.

“It was good for us because Sandy goes well to the net and does a good job forechecking,” said Robitaille, who scored his seventh goal and has 11 points in his last 10 games. “And, Stumpy is great with the puck.”

Moger scored in his second consecutive game since being reunited on a line with Stumpel, his former Boston Bruin teammate. Stumpel, who had two assists, has scored in all but four games and has a team-high 18 points.

Defenseman Garry Galley received a scare in the second period when a puck bounced off a stick and struck him in the face. He left the ice wobbly but returned in the third period.

“It was like getting punched in the jaw,” said Galley, who has 10 assists and 12 points. “After X-rays showed that I was fine, I just tried to get back on the ice and tried to help us get back into the game.”

The Kings’ penalty-killing unit had not given up a goal in 20 chances but gave up two against New York. They were the first power-play goals given up by the Kings since Edmonton scored twice in the first period at the Forum on Oct. 19.

The Kings’ scratches against the Islanders were Olli Jokinen, Roman Vopat, Brad Smyth and Mattias Norstrom. Jokinen, the No. 3 pick overall in last June’s draft, has not played during the current trip.
