City OKs Site for Skateboarding Park

After months of searching, the City Council has targeted a site for a proposed skateboarding and in-line skating park.

The council voted unanimously last week to spend $35,000 to design a park in a 130,000-square-foot area on Oak Canyon, next to the city yard in East Irvine. The council also voted to spend about $10,000 to study whether a dog park also could be developed at the site. Some residents have expressed interest in such a park.

A group of young skateboarders attending the meeting spoke in favor of the Oak Canyon site. “Do it right,” said skateboarder Blake Riegle, who suggested that skaters be involved in the design process. “I hope we can have a modern design and not something from the ‘80s.”

Mayor Christina L. Shea said a design committee will be created that will include representation from skaters, the Community Services Commission, residents and city employees.
