The city has won a California Healthy Cities award for efforts to restore its historic Mission district.

Council members will receive the award tonight for the municipality’s work crafting the revitalized district and for its weekly Family Festival.

The city is one of six statewide honored with a special achievement award by the Sacramento-based California Healthy Cities Project. The annual awards given by a panel recognize policies and programs that improve community health and well-being.

In 1993, the City Council began the restoration of the business district, which is anchored by the Mission San Gabriel. The physical environment was enhanced with trees, landscaping and new street lighting. The area attracted new restaurants and the city began sponsoring a festival each Saturday.

“We are very proud of our community, and in the knowledge that our shared vision continues to meet goals for improved social, environmental and economic health,” said Mayor Dominic Polimeni. “It is an honor to be recognized . . . for our accomplishments.”
