Minister Says She’ll Succeed Premier

Transport Minister Jenny Shipley said she has been confirmed as leader of the National Party to succeed Prime Minister Jim Bolger, who earlier announced his resignation by the end of the month. Shipley put together an ouster campaign by garnering support from party colleagues over the past two weeks while Bolger was traveling abroad. Her announcement left unclear a number of details--in particular, how the existing coalition with the populist New Zealand First Party will be managed.
