Seeking a repeat of the city’s success in hosting the 1984 Olympic Games, the City Council agreed Tuesday to endorse a bid to hold the 2012 Games in Los Angeles.

The council agreed to second the effort by the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, which has announced its intent to bid for the Games.

The Games would be organized by a new committee that would oversee all arrangements for the massive undertaking without requiring public funding.

“The 1984 Olympics are still held as a worldwide model and standard of successful Olympic Game organization, including safety, attendance and minimal public cost,” said the resolution, sponsored by Council President John Ferraro. “Having the 2012 Olympic Games in Los Angeles will generate goodwill, enhance the worldwide renown and prestige of the city of Los Angeles.”
