City Boosts Number of Historical Sites
Hoping to preserve local history and improve documentation, the City Council this week added about 100 sites to the city’s historical register.
The Santa Ana Register of Historical Property previously listed 114 sites. A committee of residents working with city staff recommended that the number be almost doubled.
The council Monday voted to add most of the suggested sites, striking some because property owners had argued against having them listed.
Owners of historically significant buildings are required to gain approval from the Planning Commission for exterior alterations.
Also, demolition of historically significant sites might be delayed for as many as 120 days while efforts are made at preservation.
The council also voted to consider appointing an advisory committee to monitor historical sites.
