Small Quakes Strike Fontana, Mammoth Lakes
A magnitude 3.6 earthquake hit the city of Fontana, eight miles west of San Bernardino, on Tuesday, and an ongoing volcanic quake swarm intensified near Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra, with quakes of magnitude 3.4, 3.0 and 3.0, seismologists said.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported more than 100 quakes struck six miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes during the day. The area, where scientists believe there may be an underground magmatic pool, has been the site of thousands of temblors since last spring.
The 3.4 quake there occurred at 5:02 a.m., and the two 3.0 quakes followed at 5:14 a.m., with many smaller quakes the rest of the day.
Fontana’s 3.6 quake took place at 6:36 a.m. There was a 4.0 and other quakes in the same area last month.
Neither damage nor injuries were reported in any of the quakes.
