Capitals Add to Canuck Woes, 2-1
The Washington Capitals got their first victory in 17 days against a team that has been struggling the entire season.
Peter Bondra scored the go-ahead goal with 12:17 left as the Capitals snapped a six-game winless streak and handed the Vancouver Canucks their eighth consecutive loss, 2-1, Tuesday night at Landover, Md.
Vancouver played much better than the team that had been outscored, 23-10, in the first four games of a five-game trip.
Goaltender Kirk McLean had 39 saves, but the Canucks fell to 3-11-2 and remained winless against the Capitals in eight games since 1992.
“I thought he gave us a chance to win it, and that’s all you can ask a goaltender to do,” Canuck Coach Tom Renney said.
San Jose 0, Toronto 0--Maple Leaf goaltenders Glenn Healy and Marcel Cousineau combined to hold the Sharks scoreless at home in a game between struggling teams.
Cousineau went into the game with 4:01 remaining in the third period when Healy suffered a cut hand. They stopped 22 San Jose shots, and Shark goaltender Mike Vernon turned away all 19 shots he faced.
It was the first time the Sharks had been involved in a scoreless tie in their seven-year history and the first time in 10 years it had happened to Toronto, which battled Minnesota to a draw Dec. 21, 1987.
