Officials Believe City Is Ready for El Nino
With much work already completed in preparation for predicted El Nino storms, the City Council agreed recently that no extraordinary measures will be needed.
The council comments came in response to a report from city staff members reviewing storm readiness measures.
“What we’ve experienced in past storms has helped get us ready for what could happen,” Public Works Director Robert Woodings said.
The report pointed out that the storm drain system was improved in 1996 and has been cleaned.
The county has also been removing debris from Aliso Creek, which empties into the ocean and often overflows during heavy rains, and shoring its banks.
Officials expect the work to be finished by the end of the month.
Repairs to Serrano Creek after it was damaged by storms in 1994-95 are holding up, the report noted.
Residents can get information about free sandbags through a county hotline at (714) 834-4074.
