Is UCLA That Good? Is USC That Bad?

Bruin fans and the local media seem to be jumping the gun a little bit on the team’s success this year.

On the one hand, Cade McNown, Skip Hicks, Jim McElroy and the offensive line are playing very well. The defense also has been very opportunistic.

On the other hand, only one victory has come against a team with a winning record, and Oregon will not crack the top 25 this season. Other wins have come against Texas, Arizona, Houston, Cal, Oregon State and Stanford, all mediocre-to-really-bad teams. Losses to Washington State and Tennessee were close games, but neither of these teams will be in the top 10 at season’s end, either.

Show me victories over Washington and USC and a trip to an alliance bowl. Doubtful, but if it happens, I will be sold.

Before all of you bandwagon USC whiners living in the past chase John Robinson from Heritage Hall, realize that the coach can’t make the plays for his players. Aside from numerous dropped passes against Washington, had “All-American” Brian Kelly just hung onto an interception at the Florida State 10-yard line, USC would be 6-3 with victories over the Seminoles and Notre Dame.
