Q AND A

Desmond Llewelyn’s first appearance in a James Bond film did not occur in 1964’s “Goldfinger,” as you state in “ ‘Q’ Tip” (Holiday Sneaks, Nov. 9). It was the previous year’s “From Russia With Love” in which Llewelyn first appeared as Q, 007’s armorer.

“Goldfinger,” however, did establish the adversarial relationship between Bond and Q and gave Llewelyn one of his best lines: After showing Bond the ejector seat in the Aston Martin DB5, Bond says, “Ejector seat? You’re joking!” To which Q replies, deadpan, “I never joke about my work, 007.”

To date, there have been five Bonds, three M’s and three Miss Moneypennys, but in the hearts of James Bond fans the world over, there remains only one Q.
