On a snowy day, Chris Howard plowed in for two touchdowns for the Wolverines, who are one victory away from completing their first perfect regular season since 1971 and going to the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1993. Next: Ohio State

2. FLORIDA STATE (10-0) BEAT WAKE FOREST, 58-7.

The Seminoles sacked the Demon Deacons’ Ben Sankey 11 times and had five interceptions as they won 10 or more games for the 11th season in a row. Thad Busby completed 27 of 35 passes for 390 yards and four touchdowns. Next: at Florida

3. NEBRASKA (10-0) BEAT IOWA STATE, 77-14.

No miracle catch was required this time as Ahman Green rushed for 209 yards and three touchdowns and Scott Frost accounted for three touchdowns as the Cornhuskers had a 63-7 lead at halftime. Next: at Colorado, Nov. 28.

4. OHIO STATE (10-1) BEAT ILLINOIS, 41-6.

Pepe Pearson ran for two touchdowns as the Buckeyes kept their Rose Bowl hopes alive. A three-way tie for the Big Ten title means Ohio State would have to be ranked No. 1 or 2 nationally to go to Pasadena. Next: at Michigan

5. TENNESSEE (8-1) BEAT ARKANSAS, 30-22.

Peyton Manning was 20 of 35 for 264 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown to Marcus Nash in the fourth quarter that put the Volunteers ahead. Tennessee goes to the SEC title game with two more victories. Next: at Kentucky

6. PENN STATE (8-1) BEAT PURDUE, 42-17.

Curtis Enis ran for 186 yards and three touchdowns on a career-high 37 carries and caught a 67-yard scoring pass but the Nittany Lions were eliminated from Rose Bowl contention. Next: Wisconsin

7. GEORGIA (7-2) LOST TO AUBURN, 45-34.

The Bulldogs fell out of contention for a bowl-alliance spot by managing only 58 yards rushing--123 below their season average. Georgia also gave up 159 yards rushing to a team ranked last in the SEC at 76 yards a game. Next: at Mississippi

8. NORTH CAROLINA (9-1) BEAT CLEMSON, 17-10.

The Tar Heels kept their bowl-alliance hopes alive as quarterback Chris Keldorf and receiver L.C. Stevens set up all three of their team’s scores with long gains on pass plays that covered 44, 58 and 67 yards. Next: Duke

9. UCLA (8-2) BEAT WASHINGTON, 52-28.

Cade McNown completed 16 of 23 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns while Skip Hicks had four touchdowns as the Bruins kept their Rose Bowl hopes alive with their eighth win in a row. Next: USC at Coliseum

10. KANSAS STATE (9-1) BEAT COLORADO, 37-20.

The Wildcats, on the verge of their first 10-victory regular season since 1910, defeated the Buffaloes for the first time since 1984. Kansas State’s first two touchdowns were set up by a fumbled kickoff and interception. Next: at Iowa State

11. LSU (7-3) LOST TO NOTRE DAME, 24-6

The Tigers came into the game averaging 276 yards rushing but were outgained by the Irish on the ground, 279-153, and didn’t get inside the Notre Dame 20 until there were eight minutes left in the game. Next: Arkansas, Nov. 28.

12. FLORIDA (8-2) BEAT SOUTH CAROLINA, 48-21.

Fred Taylor ran for 170 yards and three second-half touchdowns but Gator quarterbacks Noah Brindise and Doug Johnson continued to struggle in completing only nine of 20 passes for 196 yards. Next: Florida State

13. WASHINGTON (7-3) LOST TO UCLA, 52-28

The Huskies could finish in a four-way tie for the Pacific 10 title, but won’t get the nod to go to the Rose Bowl. A beat-up Brock Huard was 25-of-37 passing for 271 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. Next: Washington State

14. WASHINGTON STATE (9-1) BEAT STANFORD, 38-28.

Ryan Leaf passed for 258 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars kept their Rose Bowl hopes alive. Washington State needs to defeat Washington next Saturday and have Arizona State lose to Arizona on Nov. 28. Next: at Washington

15. ARIZONA STATE (8-2) BEAT OREGON, 52-31.

Michael Martin rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns as the Sun Devils stayed in contention for a return trip to the Rose Bowl. Arizona State needs Washington State and UCLA losses and a victory over its state rival. Next: Arizona, Nov. 28

16. AUBURN (8-2) BEAT GEORGIA, 45-34.

The Tigers, who had minus yardage in two of their previous three games, ran for 159 yards and five touchdowns to stay alive for the SEC Western Division championship. Next: Alabama

17. MISSISSIPPI STATE (7-2) BEAT ALABAMA, 32-20.

James Johnson ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who control their destiny in the SEC’s Western Division. Victories in their final two regular-season games give them the title. Next: at Arkansas

18. TEXAS A&M; (8-2) BEAT OKLAHOMA, 51-7

Dante Hall ran for 139 yards and three touchdowns against the downtrodden Sooners as the Aggies clinched a spot in the Big 12 Conference championship game against Nebraska. Next: Texas, Nov. 27

19. PURDUE (7-3) LOST TO PENN STATE, 42-17.

Boilermaker quarterback Billy Dicken was 33 of 60--tying a school record for attempts--for 347 yards and two touchdowns but the Nittany Lions converted both of his fourth-quarter interceptions into touchdowns. Next: at Indiana

20. VIRGINIA TECH (7-2) DID NOT PLAY.

The Hokies are tied for first in the Big East with Syracuse but are in the driver’s seat for the championship, needing only to defeat snake-bitten Pittsburgh. Virginia Tech was the last team to defeat Syracuse, 31-3 on Sept. 13. Next: at Pittsburgh

21. SYRACUSE (8-3) BEAT PITTSBURGH, 32-27.

The Orangemen blew a 19-0 lead in the fourth quarter, then came back to win their seventh consecutive game on Donovan McNabb’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Quint Spotwood with 28 seconds left. Next: at Miami, Nov. 29

22. IOWA (6-4) LOST TO NORTHWESTERN, 15-14.

The Hawkeyes missed four field goals and had a high snap on a punt result in a safety in a snowy game at Evanston, Ill. Iowa must win its next game to qualify for a bowl game. Next: Minnesota

23. WISCONSIN (8-3) LOST TO MICHIGAN, 26-16.

The Badgers, playing again without injured leading rusher Ron Dayne, scored two touchdowns in the second half against the Wolverines, who had given up only one after halftime in its previous games. Next: at Penn State

24. OKLAHOMA ST. (7-3) LOST TO TEXAS TECH, 27-3.

The Cowboys had 289 yards to the Red Raiders’ 295 but two interceptions, a fumble and five sacks prevented them from mounting a serious scoring drive until early in the fourth quarter.Next: at Baylor

25. MISSOURI (7-4) BEAT BAYLOR, 42-24.

Quarterback Corby Jones ran for 126 yards in 15 carries and accounted for two touchdowns as the Tigers clinched their first bowl berth in 14 years. Bowl possibilities are the Aloha, Alamo and and Copper. Next: Regular season completed
