Matadors Finish Strong in Soccer

In what may have been the final match of its 20-year history, the Cal State Northridge men’s soccer team routed Loyola Marymount, 6-1, Saturday in a nonconference match before 481 spectators at North Campus Stadium.

The Matador program was eliminated last June because of budgetary and gender-equity reasons before being reinstated for this season with the help of private fund-raising. The team faces an uncertain fate, however, as school administrators and a task force consider the future of the athletic program.

Saturday, Federico Arroyo scored his 10th and 11th goals and added his eighth assist as Northridge (7-11-1) posted its sixth victory in nine games. Arroyo led the Matadors in each category this season.

Joining in were junior Trevor Schmidt, who scored the first two goals of his career, and Luis Castro and Aamon Ross, who each scored once. Goalkeeper Christian Perez stopped four shots.

The team has compiled a 227-135-31 record in its history and Coach Marwan Ass’ad has guided the Matadors to a 179-96-26 mark in 15 seasons.
