Re Norbert Nizze’s Nov. 8 letter accusing the U.S. of being the most “overpopulated” on Earth: Is it more damaging to the environment to use natural gas to heat or cook, or have to cut down entire forests to provide the wood to burn for those tasks?

Is it more damaging to the environment to be able to feed your people with less land, or need to inefficiently farm vast acres of former forests, grasslands and wetlands?

Is it more damaging to the environment to have regulations to control pollution, or have few or none because your country’s main worry is proper housing and food?

Why do so many people who claim to care about the environment seem to want to return to a time when diseases were rampant from poor sanitation, spoiled food and smoky air; and the average person lived a short, nasty life?
