Sheriff Sherman Block and police chiefs from 10 cities in southeastern Los Angeles County signed an agreement Monday that will improve emergency responses during major disasters or civil unrest.

The mutual aid pact was signed by the Sheriff’s Department and the cities of Bell, Bell Gardens, Compton, Downey, Huntington Park, Maywood, Montebello, South Gate, Vernon and Whittier, said Deputy Jim Hellmold.

“The mutual aid agreement between the law enforcement agencies is designed to enhance law enforcement emergency response,” Block said.

A mutual aid plan already exists, but Monday’s agreement formalizes the pact and establishes a protocol in case of an emergency.
