Peace Treaty Nearer, U.S. Official Says

North Korea appears ready to start its first high-level talks with South Korea and the United States on a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War, a senior U.S. State Department official who asked not to be identified said. The talks, also involving China, are likely to begin in Geneva in the first half of next month and likely to be “very long and extended,” the official told reporters. A four-party working-level session to prepare for the talks will be held Friday in New York.
