Longtime dining hangouts that are always in style:
Monty’s Steakhouse, 1100 Glendon Ave., Westwood, (310) 208-8787. For nearly 30 years, this classic restaurant has gleefully upped the cholesterol count of its meat-loving aficionados.
Musso & Frank Grill, 6667 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, (213) 467-5123. If you don’t know that Thursday’s special is Chicken Pot Pie or that Tuesday’s soup is minestrone, you’re not a true denizen of Hollywood. Last week alone, this venerable restaurant--which celebrates its 80th birthday in 1999--fed Nicolas Cage, Olympia Dukakis and Keith Richards.
Pacific Dining Car, 1310 W. 6th St., Los Angeles, (213) 483-6000. You can travel the world over and probably not find a more fabulous place to dine on Eggs Sardou at midnight, elbow to elbow with Placido Domingo or James Ellroy, and guess what? It never closes.
The Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, 9641 W. Sunset Blvd., Beverly Hills, (310) 276-2251. This swelegant lounge was created in 1941 (the hotel was built in 1912) and, despite some freshening up, it’s kept its vintage ‘40s glow.
Dan Tana’s, 9071 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, (310) 275-9444. The Lake Superior White Fish is like butter and has thrown its patrons into a dizzying caloric head-spin for more than three decades.
Trader Vic’s, 9876 Wilshire Ave., Beverly Hills, (310) 276-6345. This ‘50s dining paradise, adjacent to the Beverly Hilton, stands as testimony to the L.A. truism that everything old is new again.
Twin Dragon, 8597 W. Pico Blvd., L.A., (310) 657-7355. When Twin Dragon positioned its fierce temple dogs at the door back in 1960, who knew its aromatic prawns would taste so sweet?
