CISL America Upsets Brazil to Stay Unbeaten
CISL America remained unbeaten Wednesday at the World Championship of Indoor Soccer in Mexico City by upsetting Brazil in a shootout, 5-4.
The U.S. team (5-0) won the shootout, 3-1, getting goals from Arizona’s Terry Woodberry, Sacramento’s Mark Thomas and Detroit’s Joey Kirk, and a solid performance from Portland goalkeeper Brett Phillips (22 saves).
Splash defender Rich Ryerson scored for the United States, and Fernando Clavijo, the Continental Indoor Soccer League’s coach of the year at Seattle, tied the score in the final minute, forcing overtime.
The United States, the top-seeded team in Group B, plays Uruguay, the second team from Group A, in the medal round round Friday. Group A winner Mexico will play Brazil.
