New Code Would Let Artists Live in Studios

In an effort to promote the downtown Artists Village, the City Council on Monday might approve an ordinance that would allow some artists to live in their work studios.
The arrangements, known as live-work spaces, would be an integral part of forming an artists enclave, according to a city report.
The ordinance would apply only to existing buildings that are turned into live-work spaces, downtown project manager Susan Jones-Helper said.
Under the proposed code, a live-work space would be at least 750 square feet. At least 220 square feet would be required for living space, including a separate bathroom and kitchen.
Plumbing and electrical requirements would follow residential standards, according to the city report.
The Artists Village is a mixture of private galleries and proposed public buildings that officials hope will revitalize part of the downtown.
