Carey is already regarded as one of the finest setters in the county and she sparkled again, leading Newport Harbor past second-ranked Laguna Beach Thursday, 15-9, 14-16, 15-12, 15-9. The 6-foot-1 three-year varsity player had 57 assists, seven kills and five blocks. “She has great instincts,” Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said.

* Mission Viejo, sophomore. Finished three-mile course at Fairview Park in a course-record 18 minutes 22 seconds to lead second-ranked Mission Viejo past Mater Dei.
Erin Zehntner/Cross-Country
* Irvine, junior. Won three-mile race in 18:02 to lead host Irvine, ranked third, past ninth-ranked El Toro, 25-30.
