Council Moves to Tighten Restrictions on Gun Dealers
The City Council has given preliminary approval to two ordinances that would tighten restrictions on gun dealers. The ordinances will become law next month if they win final council approval in two weeks.
One ordinance, approved on a 6-0 vote with Councilman William Paparian absent, would ban the sale of firearms outside the city’s industrial areas, require all gun dealers to obtain a special permit from the city and ban the sale of guns from homes.
“This will add the same kind of restrictions we have on liquor stores and video game parlors,” Councilman Paul Little said.
The other ordinance, approved on a 5-0 vote with Councilwoman Ann-Marie Villicana abstaining, requires gun dealers to keep $1-million in liability insurance and provide a trigger lock or safety device on weapons sold.
