College Will Hold Event to Encourage Nonviolence
Santa Monica College will sponsor Youth Day for Peace and Harmony on Saturday “to encouraging students to think about nonviolence,” said college spokesman Bruce Smith.
The event will feature students drawing portraits of each other on plexiglass, with the artwork put together into a larger collage to be exhibited in City Hall and libraries, he said.
Nearly 200 1st- through 12th-grade students are expected to participate in the project, which is sponsored by a coalition of public agencies, schools and community religious organizations, said Smith.
“Art is a way of life. We’re looking to produce something so that everyone who shares in the process has something to show for it,” said project leader Don Emery, professor of fine art at the college. “That’s the same way the peace process works.”
