Antelope Valley’s game at Littlerock on Saturday could go a long way in determining the Golden League championship.

The Antelopes (3-2), rated fifth regionally by The Times, are looking for at least a share of their fourth straight crown. The 10th-ranked Lobos (5-1), in their seventh varsity season, are attempting to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 1992.

“Antelope Valley has been around, what, 70, 80, 90 years?” Littlerock Coach Jim Bauer said. “They have rooms full of trophies they don’t know even what to do with. Over here, we’re so honored to get a trophy that it’s worth a day of celebration.”

Balancing act: Almost every coach begins the season with the promise that his team will have a balanced offense. Palmdale and Coach Jeff Williams have fared best in the area at keeping that promise.

Entering tonight’s Golden League game at Quartz Hill, the Falcons have gained 921 yards on the ground and 925 through the air.

BASKETBALL

Greco update: Crescenta Valley girls’ basketball player Michelle Greco, The Times’ 1996-97 Player of the Year, will take the third of her four scheduled recruiting trips this weekend when she visits USC.

Greco, who already has visited UC Santa Barbara and UCLA, will visit Colorado next week. She is expected to make an official commitment by Nov. 12, the first day to sign early.

VOLLEYBALL

That certain Smiley: Sylmar High, last season’s City Section 3-A Division volleyball champion, is at it again. The Spartans defeated Valley Pac-8 Conference rival Poly in a five-game match Tuesday after trailing, 13-7, in the final game.

A rematch next Thursday at Poly and a Nov. 3 match against Van Nuys stand between the Spartans (8-0, 5-0) and a second consecutive top seeding for the 3-A playoffs.

Sandra Smiley, City Section 3-A Division co-player of the year last season, had 50 assists and four kills against the Parrots.

“I don’t know where we’d be without her,” Coach Bob Thomson said.
