Successful Labor Talks Applauded
* As a law enforcement executive, I watched with interest as the press chronicled recent job actions and sickouts by police officers in a neighboring jurisdiction. The Ventura County Deputy Sheriffs’ Assn. was at impasse over salary and benefits at the same time, and it was our responsibility as managers to ensure that deputies remained available to respond to the community’s public safety needs.
This impasse was just successfully resolved without the type of labor actions that deprive the public of vital services. The Board of Supervisors deserves credit for reaching a fair settlement without jeopardizing the county’s financial stability.
The deputy sheriffs who patrol the majority of the county, staff the jails, courts and a multitude of special units also deserve credit for their restraint and professionalism.
The residents of Ventura County have been well served by elected officials who found creative ways to negotiate this contract and deputy sheriffs who did not allow their needs to supersede those of those they have taken an oath to protect.
