Two Oxnard residents who were seen smoking marijuana and drinking beer outside a downtown Oxnard restaurant were arrested for alleged drug violations and outstanding warrants, Oxnard police said Thursday.

Juan Manuel Sanchez and Maria Elena Estrada, both 24, were arrested by two police officers on bicycle patrol out of the downtown police storefront. Police said the arrests came as part of a stepped-up effort to meet the needs of downtown businesses.

Officers Manuel Vega and Jason Benites say they saw the pair smoking pot and drinking with several others outside the Old Mexico Restaurant at 852 South A St. about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

They were arrested on suspicion of narcotics possession, being under the influence of a controlled substance and providing false information to a police officer, police said.

Sanchez was found to have an outstanding felony warrant for sales of methamphetamine and was considered armed and dangerous, police said. Estrada had four outstanding misdemeanor warrants, police said.

Both were booked into Ventura County Jail.
