A small fire erupted in the wood shop at Matilija Junior High School on Thursday night but was quickly doused by county firefighters.

Fire officials estimated damage at $5,000. The building was uninhabited and locked when the fire broke out. There were no injuries.

The fire started in machinery inside the shop, a metal structure detached from the main school building.

Although an arson investigator was sent to the scene, county fire officials did not think the blaze was suspicious. Investigators believe that a buildup of sawdust may have ignited.
