Shields Does It All for Weber State

Scott Shields accounted for 17 of his team’s 29 points as Weber State defeated Division II Western (Colo.) State, 29-13, Saturday night in the opener for both teams at Ogden, Utah.

Shields, a junior free safety who also kicks and punts, had two interceptions, returning one for an 18-yard touchdown. He kicked three field goals and averaged 44.2 yards per punt.

Northern Arizona 33, St. Cloud (Minn.) State 10--Travis Brown threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns as the Lumberjacks overcame a sluggish start Saturday night in the nonconference game in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Lumberjacks (1-1) trailed, 10-0, before getting their offense going against St. Cloud State (0-1). Brown was 23 of 36 with four interceptions. Northern Arizona got two fourth-quarter touchdowns, one on Brown’s 10-yard pass to Gibbons St. Paul.

Idaho 46, Portland State 0--The Vikings, picked to finish at or near the bottom in the Big Sky race, dropped to 0-2 with the nonconference loss at Moscow, Idaho.

A tenacious defensive effort gave the Vandals (1-1), a Division I-A team, their first shutout since 1993 and their first shutout in the Kibbie Dome since 1985.

Idaho’s Brian Brennan completed 18 of 28 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns.

Utah State 41, Idaho State 7--Tight end Robert McBride’s first-quarter touchdown pass from Gary Anderson tied the score, 7-7, but it was all Utah State (2-0) after that in a nonconference game in Logan, Utah. It was Idaho State’s opener.

Eastern Washington 63, Rocky Mountain 7--Harry Leons threw four touchdown passes to pace the Eagles, who rolled up 336 yards and four touchdowns in the first quarter, in their opener on Saturday at Cheney, Wash. Rocky Mountain, an NAIA program, did not score until the third quarter.
