Ricky Williams ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns and Aaron Humphrey had three interceptions as No. 12 Texas overcame a turnover-filled first half and rolled to a 48-14 victory over Rutgers Saturday night.

Texas quarterback James Brown left the game late in the first half with a sprained left ankle and didn’t return. Team doctors said the injury wasn’t serious but didn’t speculate as to how long he would be sidelined.

The Longhorns (1-0) trailed, 7-0, after the first quarter and needed two big plays--a 74-yard touchdown run by Williams and a 32-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Wane McGarity after Humphrey’s second pickoff--to take a 13-7 lead over the Scarlet Knights (0-2) at halftime.

Texas, which had three first-half turnovers, broke the game open in the third quarter, scoring 28 points, including two one-yard touchdown runs by Williams and two 50-yard-plus field goals by Phil Dawson.

Dawson accounted for 10 points in the game, becoming the school’s career scoring leader with 284 points, surpassing the previous record of 282 set by former kicker Jeff Ward (1983-86).

Texas’ defense, which gave up 100 yards to 10 backs last year, made its debut in a 4-3 defense after converting from a 3-4. Rutgers’ Jacki Crooks showed the Longhorns still have some work to do, rushing for 109 yards in 24 carries.
