The Torrance Unified School District on Friday threw itself a 50th birthday party with a sold-out, $35-a-plate dinner at a local hotel banquet room.

“We gave up our little dance floor so we wouldn’t have to turn people away,” said a district spokeswoman of efforts to accommodate 630 paying guests.

Providing some of the many reminiscences were such distinguished graduates as television anchorman Paul Moyer (Torrance High, Class of 1958). U.S. Undersecretary of State Rudy deLeon (North High, Class of ‘70) could not leave his post in Washington, so he sent a videotaped message.

Dinner proceeds, not taxpayer funds, paid for the celebration, district officials said.
