The El Camino Real High and Chaminade football teams didn’t play with a greased melon Friday night at Chaminade, it just appeared that way.

El Camino Real won, 15-0, in a sloppy intersectional game that featured 10 fumbles, a blocked punt, a blocked field-goal attempt and two missed conversions.

Demond Daniels scored touchdowns for the Conquistadores (2-0) on a 36-yard fumble return in the second quarter and a 22-yard pass reception in the fourth quarter.

El Camino Real outgained the Eagles, 249-20, in total yards.

“Everything was not sharp and we didn’t get our offense going as much as we wanted to, but I guess it’s a good sign when you win the ugly ones,” said Conquistadore Coach Rick Hayashida, a former Chaminade assistant.

El Camino Real scored with 8 1/2 minutes left in the first half. Eagle quarterback Ray Rodriguez fumbled an option pitch when he was hit by Daniels, who scooped up the ball and ran to the end zone.

The Conquistadores increased their lead to 9-0 with 4:20 to play in the third quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Blane Kezirian.

Early in the fourth quarter, El Camino Real quarterback Aaron Fredette lofted a pass into the corner of the end zone and Daniels caught after streaking past defender Vinnie Consolo.

Chaminade (0-2) was utterly ineffective with its veer option. The Eagles’ longest running play went for seven yards and 15 of their 27 rushing plays went for no gain or negative yardage.

The Eagles lost six of eight fumbles and have committed 14 turnovers in two games.

“I don’t think they were ready,” Daniels said of Chaminade’s offense. “They came out all shaky. Their quarterback had trouble on the pitches. He acted like he didn’t even want the ball.”
