University 14, El Monte Arroyo 14--University is getting closer to a victory.

After a tough one-point loss to Irvine last week, University tied El Monte Arroyo in a back-and-forth nonleague football game at Arroyo.

The Trojans (0-1-1) had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but Chris Gray’s 42-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Arroyo’s Jesse Ortiz with less than 10 seconds left in the game.

University recovered the ball on its 49-yard line, but quarterback Andy Dennis’ pass fell incomplete to end the game.

Dennis and cornerback Chet Johnson got University into field-goal range.

After Johnson intercepted a pass by Arroyo’s Kenny Smith and returned it to University’s 46-yard line with 21 seconds left, Dennis found Jeff Albinio for a 30-yard pass to Arroyo’s 24-yard line. The field goal was then blocked.

The interception was Johnson’s second of the game and University’s third of the night.

But the Trojans didn’t have a lot success against Smith and the Knights’ passing attack in the first half.

The Trojans tied the score, 14-14, on a one-yard run by Defeo with 7:58 left in the game.
