Mission Viejo Gets Its Kicks in Victory

Senior Nick Gilliam kicked a school-record three field goals and caught a touchdown pass to lead Mission Viejo to a 30-0 nonleague victory over Aliso Niguel Friday night at Mission Viejo High.

Gilliam, who broke the previous field goal record of two, also kicked three extra points and had four pass receptions for 81 yards.

Mission Viejo (2-0) also received a strong performance from senior Mike Chavis, who rushed for 81 yards in 18 carries.

Chavis also had two interceptions as a defensive back.

Aliso Niguel (0-2) was led by senior running back Nathan Eggins, who rushed for 86 yards in 21 carries.

Gilliam helped Mission Viejo to a 7-0 lead when he caught a 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jake Fitch with three minutes, one second left in the first quarter.

Fitch then scored on a quarterback keeper from one-yard out with 9:14 left in the half, capping a nine-play, 59-yard drive, to put the Diablos ahead, 14-0.

Mission Viejo took a 17-0 lead on a 43-yard field goal by Gilliam with 5:16 left in the third quarter.

Mission Viejo extended its lead to 24-0 when Chavis scored from nine yards out with 11:14 left in the game.

Gilliam added a 37-yard field goal with 6:26 left and a 24-yard field goal with 2:27 to go in the game to complete the scoring.

The Diablos also got a strong effort from Fitch, who completed six of 15 passes for 115 yards.
