A new Beck song, “Dead Weight,” will be the first single from the soundtrack to “A Life Less Ordinary,” the upcoming film from “Trainspotting” director Danny Boyle. Boyle himself will direct the video with appearances by movie co-stars Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz--if McGregor can get time off from another film he’s currently shooting. Among other tracks on the soundtrack album--all of them actually included in the movie, a rarity these days--is R.E.M.’s “Leave,” with new vocals by Michael Stipe, and a remix by Massive Attack’s Johnny Dollar. . . .

This weekend, Mike Watt is shooting a video with director Spike Jonze for “Liberty Calls” from “Contemplating the Engine Room,” his upcoming concept album about his life in music and San Pedro. The clip will be a sendup of ‘80s rap videos a la Run-DMC, with Watt even trying his luck at break dancing.
